Chevrolet introduced the Volt plug-in hybrid compact car in 2010. General Motors also introduced the Volt in other markets around the world like Australia, New Zealand, England, and China under different nameplates. The Volt was the outcome of a promise that Chevrolet made in 2007 to design and build the world’s first electric car with extended range capability. Well, the Volt is not all-electric, but it is close to that. It was well received when it was introduced to the global car market, and it even won several awards that include the 2009 Green Car Vision Award, the 2011 North American Car of the Year, the 2011 Green Car of the Year, the 2011 World Green Car, and the 2012 European Car of the Year.
General Motors unveiled the Chevrolet Volt concept car in 2007 at the North American International Auto Show. GM’s vice-chairman for global product development Robert Lutz termed it as a “Prius fighter”. However, car buyers had to wait until November 2010 for the fully complete Volt models to roll off the assembly line. The Volt was a front-engine, front-wheel drive car that had four doors and a rear liftgate.
The 1st-generation Volt can only carry up to four passengers because of its high central tunnel that runs from the front console to the rear seat. The tunnel houses the Volt’s large, T-shaped lithium-ion battery pack. The 1st-generation Volt is based on the GM Delta II platform and is driven by two electric motors that collectively develop 111 kW (149 hp) and 273 lb.-ft. (370 N⋅m) of torque. These motors draw stored electric energy from a 16 kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and they deliver power and torque to the front wheels via a planetary-type multi-mode electric transaxle. The car also comes equipped with an 80-hp, naturally aspirated 1.4-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine that serves as a range extender. This powertrain enables the Volt to operate as an all-electric car when it is running in single-motor or dual-motor drive modes. However, when the charge in the lithium-ion battery pack gets to a certain preset minimum level, the powertrain activates the 1.4-liter gas engine and starts to operate as a series hybrid car; the gas engine powers the electric motors while the electric motors drive the wheels.
The lithium-ion battery pack of the 1st-generation Volt is recharged via an onboard SAE J1772 charger that can be plugged into a 120-volt power outlet or a 240-volt power outlet. The 1st-generation Volt offers an EPA-estimated EV (all-electric) drive range of up to 38 miles. When the 1.4-liter gas engine kicks in, the car’s total driving range can extend up to 380 miles. The 2nd-generation Volt was unveiled in 2015 for the 2016 model year. This generation has a sleeker, bolder, and more athletic exterior design, and its interior is slightly larger, with seating space for up to five passengers. The two electric motors in the 1st generation Volt were carried over to this generation, but the range-extender gasoline engine was upgraded to a 1.5-liter gas engine. The 2nd-generation Volt is also equipped with an upgraded 18.4 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. These powertrain upgrades improve this generation’s EV driving range to 53 miles; its total driving range also improves to 420 miles. The power output remains the same as that of the 1st generation. The 2nd-generation Volt is also well equipped. Its top-of-the-range Premier trim level offers 17-inch wheels, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated and power-adjustable front seats, heated rear outboard seats, keyless entry and ignition, a wireless charging pad, a navigation system, and much more.
