Introduced to replace Chevy TrailBlazer SUV and Chevy Uplander minivan, the Chevy Traverse is Chevrolet’s largest unibody SUV. The Traverse concept vehicle was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit in 2003, but the world had to wait until 2009 to get its mass production models. The Traverse, which is now in its second generation, was initially marketed as a full-size crossover SUV but is now classified as a 3-row, midsize crossover SUV. It is based on GM’s Lambda platform, which it shares with the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Saturn Outlook.
With a length of up to 205 inches, the Traverse is a big SUV, but thanks to its unitized body construction and its independent suspension, it does not feel as cumbersome as you would expect an SUV of its size to be. It offers responsive, car-like handling with little body roll when cornering, and its ride quality is also impressive. The Traverse is also available with either front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. The all-wheel-drive models offer better traction and cornering control. Another advantage that both generations of the Traverse offer is above-average interior space. Many other large, 3-row SUVs offer third rows that are only big enough to accommodate children, but the Traverse can comfortably accommodate adults in its third row. It can also carry up to eight passengers. At the back, the Traverse offers up to 24 cubic feet of cargo space behind the 3rd-row seats. When the split-folding 2nd- and 3rd-row seats are folded down, the SUV’s total cargo space increases up to an impressive 117 cubic feet in the 1st-generation models.
The 1st-generation Chevy Traverse was introduced in 2009 for the 2010 model year. It was offered in LS, LT and LTZ trim levels. The LT models came in either 1LT or 2LT sub trims. The top-of-the-range LTZ models offered features and accessories like 20-inch wheels, power-adjustable front seats that are heated and ventilated, a tri-zone automatic climate control system, a 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, an optional rear-seat DVD entertainment system, and much more. Driving all the models of this generation was a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 gasoline engine that delivered up to 288 hp. The 1st-generation Traverse could tow up to 5,200 pounds.
The 2nd-generation Traverse was unveiled in January 2017 for the 2018 model year. It is based upon a lighter and more rigid C1XX platform that delivers improved driving dynamics. This generation is offered in five trim levels, namely the L, LS, LT, Premier, and High Country. The 2nd-generation Traverse offers new technology like Apple CarPay and Android Auto smartphone integration for the MyLink touchscreen infotainment system, a hands-free power tailgate, a keyless entry system with push-button start, Teen Driver Technology, and safety technologies like high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, forward collision warning, and with autonomous emergency braking. This generation also offers a wider range of convenience features that includes an available SkyScape panoramic moonroof, an available wireless charging pad, an available power-folding third-row seat, and much more. Under the hood, the 2nd-generation Traverse features either a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine or a naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 engine.
