The Chevy Spark subcompact hatchback is one of Chevrolet’s entrants in the subcompact car segment. It is also Chevrolet’s smallest car offering. This small, 5-door hatchback was first launched in 1998, but it made its North American debut in 2012. The Spark is at home in the city where traffic lights, bends and turns/corners, and traffic jams abound. Thanks to its petite dimensions, its low curb weight, and its responsive handling, it is very easy to drive around the city. It also returns excellent fuel economy ratings thanks to its small, enhanced engine options, so it won’t cost you much at the fuel pump when you have to drive it around all day. Also, with the Spark, it is easy to find in-city parking spaces; this car also enables you to take advantage of narrow city roads or alleys that may help you get to your destination quicker.
The Spark was first introduced in 1998 as the Daewoo Matiz by Daewoo Motors of South Korea. Daewoo Motors later became GM Korea when it was taken over by General Motors in 2002. The Daewoo Matiz replaced the Daewoo Tico, which was also a small city hatchback. When building and designing the Matiz, Daewoo Motors took advantage of a subcompact car design that Italian automaker Fiat had rejected. Daewoo Motors also took the 0.8-liter straight-three gasoline engine from the Tico model and enhanced it with a multi-point fuel injection system before installing it in the Matiz. This revised engine delivered 51 horsepower. The Matiz was also based on the platform of the Tico. This design and engineering concept for the Matiz worked; the Matiz quickly became one of the Daewoo Motors’ top-selling models internationally.
The 2nd-generation Spark was introduced in 2005, after GM had taken over Daewoo Motors. It was sold as the Chevrolet Matiz or the Chevrolet Spark, depending on the market in which it was being sold. This 2nd-generation Spark had a more aerodynamic exterior for enhanced fuel economy, and its interior was also more appealing with its centrally positioned instrument cluster and its contemporary dashboard design. Either a 0.8-liter 3-cylinder engine or a 1.0-liter 4-cylinder engine drove this generation. It also got a revised twist-beam rear suspension system that improved ride quality.
The 3rd-generation Spark, which was introduced in 2009, was a different car. It was based on the Chevrolet Beat concept car of 2007, and it was offered in 4-door sedan/notchback or 5-door hatchback options. In South Korea, this car was sold as the Daewoo Matiz Creative, but in most other markets except Australia, it was sold as the Chevrolet Spark or Chevrolet Beat. In Australia, it was called the Holden Barina Spark. When it debuted in North America in 2012, the 3rd-generation Spark came equipped with an 84-horsepower 1.2-liter S-TEC engine that paired with a continuously variable transmission. These US-spec models came in LS, 1LT, and 2LT trim levels, and they offered accessories like 15-inch alloy wheels, a MyLink touchscreen display with Bluetooth connectivity and satellite radio, optional fog lights, optional roof rails, and much more.
Introduced in 2016, the current 4th-generation Spark is predominantly referred to as the Chevrolet Spark. It features a bolder, more dynamic design, a more refined interior, and a more potent 98-hp 1.4-liter gasoline engine. This generation also offers more hi-tech features like a keyless entry system and a larger, upgraded touchscreen infotainment system that has Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. It also offers optional intelligent safety features like a lane departure alert system, a blind-spot monitoring system, and a forward collision alert system.
