The Ford Motor Company has produced the Ford Ranger pickup truck since 1989. In North America, Ford offered the Ranger from 1983 to 2012, and then from 2019 to the present. In other markets around the world like Australia and Europe, Ford has offered the Ranger from 1998 to the present. Until 2010, Ford offered the Ranger as a compact pickup truck, but after 2010, the Ranger grew to a midsize pickup truck. Today, the Ranger remains Ford’s smallest truck offering. It is available in a variety of configurations that vary depending on the market and the model year. The Ranger can be had with either rear-wheel-drive or 4-wheel-drive.
Ford’s history with the ‘Ranger’ name did not start with the Ranger pickup truck. The first time the Ranger name appeared on a Ford vehicle was in 1958, on the base trim level of the 1958-1960 Edsel sedan. The Ranger name then reappeared in 1965 on a trim package of the F-Series pickup truck. Later on in 1972, the Ford Bronco SUV also got a ‘Ranger’ top-trim level. The ‘Ranger’ name finally found its home in the Ford Ranger pickup truck in 1983.
When the 1st-generation Ranger entered the market in 1983, it replaced the Ford Courier pickup truck. The 1st-generation Ranger compact pickup truck was initially just offered as a 3-passenger regular cab pickup truck with two wheelbase options: a 108-inch-long wheelbase and a 114-inch-long wheelbase. The 108-inch wheelbase models came with a 6-foot-long cargo bed while the longer-wheelbase models got a 7-foot-long bed. In 1986, a Supercab (extended cab) body style was added. The 1st-generation Ranger was also offered with several engine options that grew in output over the generation’s 9-year run. The strongest engine option in 1983 was a 115-horsepower 2.8-liter V6, and by 1992, the truck could be had with a more potent 160-horsepower 4.0-liter V6 engine.
The 2nd-generation Ranger was introduced in 1993. Besides cosmetic changes like a sleeker, more contemporary body design with rounder edges, this generation added an ABS system, driver and front-passenger side airbags, improved cloth/vinyl cabin materials, an upgraded sound system with a CD changer, and much more. This generation also featured more powerful versions of the 1st-generation Ranger engines.
The 3rd-generation Ranger was introduced in 1998. It had a longer wheelbase and larger SuperCab models that came with two rear jump seats and a rear suicide door. The 3rd-generation Ranger was also beefier and more rugged than its prior models. This generation was offered with a 2.5 L I4 engine, a 3.0 L V6 engine, or a 4.0 L V6 engine. This generation also saw the introduction of the all-electric Ranger EV truck. It had an EV range of 65 miles and it was offered mostly to fleet customers between 1998 and 2002.
The larger, midsize 4th-generation Ranger (also called the T6) was introduced into the North American market in 2019, but it has been on sale in other markets since 2011. Ford Australia built and designed the Ranger T6. The T6 shares its underpinnings with the 2nd-generation Mazda BT-50 pickup truck. It is offered in regular cab, SuperCab, and SuperCrew body styles. The SuperCrew models seat five people and feature four full-size doors. Being a midsize pickup truck, the Ranger T6 features longer wheelbase options of up to 141.1 inches. This generation also offers an 8-foot-long cargo bed option. Powering many of the 4th-generation Ranger models is a 2.3 L turbocharged EcoBoost I4 gas engine.
