South Korean automaker Hyundai Motor Company is an automaker that rose from obscurity to become one of the largest and most recognized car manufacturers in the world. The Hyundai Motor Company, along with its subsidiary companies, i.e. Kia Motors and Genesis Motors, make up the Hyundai Motor Group. Besides being the largest car manufacturer in South Korea, the Hyundai Motor Group is currently the fifth largest car manufacturer in the world. The word ‘Hyundai’ is a Korean word that stands for ‘modernity’. Given how Hyundai embraces modern technology and new innovations, this is a fitting name. The company’s “new thinking, new possibilities” slogan further confirms this.
The Hyundai Motor Group also has the world’s largest vehicle production plant. Located in Ulsan, South Korea, the production plant has a footprint of approximately 15 million square meters and can produce 1.6 million vehicles every year. The Ulsan plant also has approximately 34,000 employees, many of whom live within its grounds.
Hyundai Motors, along with the entire Hyundai Group, started out as the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in 1947. Chung Ju-Yung, a brilliant entrepreneur and industrialist, founded it. Chung Ju-Yung founded the Hyundai Engineering and Construction Company in anticipation of the post-war reconstruction and industrialization process that South Korea had to undertake after the Second World War. He won several government contracts to build transportation infrastructure e.g. roads, bridges, dams, and shipping yards. It wasn’t until 1967 that Hyundai Motors was established. Hyundai Motor’s first project was the Cortina, a 2-door/4-door saloon or estate which was produced in 1968 in close cooperation with the Ford Motor Company. In 1975, Hyundai Motors released the Pony, South Korea’s first car. This car gave Hyundai international recognition. It was exported to Ecuador the next year, and then to the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg), and then to England in 1982, and then to Canada in 1984. Hyundai Motors entered the US market in 1986 with its Excel compact car; two years later, it also started exporting the Sonata midsize car to the USA.
In 1996, Hyundai Motors started a process of re-branding itself to achieve world-class car manufacturer status. Chung Ju Yung knew that the success of such a process required new ideas and modern strategies, and so in 1999, he handed over the leadership of Hyundai Motors to Chung Mong Koo, his son. In addition, the Hyundai Motor Group invested heavily in long-term research into ways of enhancing its design, quality, and manufacturing processes. This resulted in the steady improvement of the overall quality and design of Hyundai vehicles. Today, according to Consumer Reports, Hyundai is ranked fifth among the most reliable automotive brands on the market. Hyundai Motors also offers an unmatched 10-year/100,000-mile warranty for all its vehicles; this attests to the confidence that it has in the build quality of its vehicles.
