GMC is one of the longest-running divisions of well-reputed automaker General Motors. It was founded in 1912, when the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company was merged with the Reliance Motor Car Company. The names of these two companies were dropped and the name ‘GMC’ was adopted. GMC differs from most other vehicle brands in the fact that it does not produce cars. Its main focus is in producing utility vehicles, i.e. SUVs, pickup trucks, large commercial trucks, buses, vans, and military vehicles. Also, unlike most other American vehicle brands, GMC is only offered in North America and in the Middle East.
The accomplishments of the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company greatly inspired the GMC’s utility vehicle focus. The Rapid Motor Vehicle Company had built the Rapid F-406-B truck in 1909; this truck became the first truck to reach the summit of Pikes Peak – a 14,110-foot mountain in Colorado’s Rocky Mountain range. Also, believe it or not, GMC is also one of the first vehicle brands to venture into building electric vehicles in the US. It attempted to build electric trucks between 1912 and 1917.
From 1920, GMC started sharing platforms of various vehicles with its GM sister company Chevrolet. Because of that, many GMC vehicles that have been built from that time look a lot like their similarly sized Chevrolet vehicle counterparts. In 1937, GMC built its first SUV – the GMC Suburban, which was also called the GMC Yukon XL. The GMC Sierra pickup truck came about much later in 1962, while the popular Jimmy SUV came along in 1970. Today, GMC offers top-rated SUVs like the Terrain, Acadia, and Yukon, as well as capable trucks like the Canyon midsize pickup truck and the Sierra line of full-size trucks.
The good news is that it is easy to get GMC parts and accessories for most GMC vehicles, both new and used. There are still many old yet fully functional GMC vehicles on the road because GMC vehicles are tough and durable. GM has gone to great lengths to make most the parts and accessories for all its vehicles available all across the country (even for the ones that aren’t being produced anymore).
