The Ford Edge midsize SUV has been on the market since 2006. In both its generations, it has shared platforms with the large Ford Fusion sedan and the Lincoln MKX, so it is larger than the Ford Escape compact SUV yet smaller than the Ford Explorer 3-row, midsize SUV. It is a front-engine, front-wheel-drive SUV that can be had with all-wheel-drive. The Edge does not come equipped with a third-row seat bench and is not as large as some practicality-focused midsize SUVs on the market, but being a midsize SUV, it comes equipped with larger, more potent engines than the ones offered in the compact SUV segment. Therefore, the Edge appeals to car buyers who are looking to buy a fairly large SUV for more emotional reasons. It is loved for its edgy styling, sporty handling, and impressive performance. The ‘Edge’ name was derived from a trim level of the Ford Ranger pickup truck.
The 1st-generation Ford Edge (codenamed the U387) was introduced at the 2006 North American International Auto Show in January 2006. It stood out on account of its bold, sleek exterior styling, and it could be had with optional attention-grabbing 18-inch chrome-clad aluminum wheels. On the inside, the 1st-generation Edge also offered a high quality cabin that was equipped with many desirable amenities and convenience features and accessories. Its main trim levels included the SE, SEL, Limited, and Sport. Some features you’d get in the Limited trim level models include 6-way power-adjustable and heated front seats, dual-zone electronic automatic temperature control, a SYNC touchscreen infotainment system, and a premium AM/FM audio system with a 6-disc in-dash CD/MP3 player. The cabin of the 1st-generation Edge was also roomy and comfortable. It offered sizable, well-cushioned seats and plenty of seating space for adults in both rows. Under the hood, the 1st-gen Edge may be had with any of three engines: a 240-hp 2.0 L turbo 4-cylinder engine, 285-hp 3.5-liter V6 engine, or a 305-hp 3.7-liter V6 engine.
The 2nd-generation Ford Edge came into the market in 2015. It is based on an improved Ford CD4 platform that delivers improved handling and ride quality. It also has sharper lines and a more streamlined shape, and its front fascia is designed to look more like those of the Ford Taurus and Ford Explorer. The 2nd-generation also offers more powerful engines that range from a 250-hp 2.0 L turbo 4-cylinder engine to an ST-specific 335-horsepower 2.7 L turbo V6 engine. This generation also offers four trim levels, namely the SE, SEL, Titanium and ST. The premium Titanium trim level offers features like a hands-free power liftgate, 19-inch alloy wheels, front parking sensors, a heated steering wheel, a 12-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, heated and cooled front seats, ambient cabin lighting, and much more. The performance-oriented ST trim level adds sporty accessories like sport-tuned shock absorbers, an exclusive ST grille, 20-inch alloy wheels, ST performance brakes, and summer performance tires.
