The Ford EcoSport is the smallest crossover in Ford’s SUV lineup. It was introduced to the North American car market in 2018 but it has been in production in other parts of the world since 2003. Both the 1st- and 2nd-generation EcoSport models share their Ford B platforms with the small Ford Fiesta subcompact car, so the EcoSport is a small SUV. It adds a high ride height, nimble handling, high fuel economy, commendable practicality, and affordability to its petite dimensions, so it’s a great option for people who need city-friendly daily drivers.
Introduced in 2003, the 1st-generation Ford EcoSport was designed in Brazil in the Ford Brazil Development Center. It quickly became one of the Ford’s top-selling vehicles in Brazil and other South American countries like Argentina, Venezuela, and Mexico. Just as the ‘eco’ in its name suggests, this small crossover delivered great fuel economy. The 1st-generation EcoSport was offered with the following engine options: a 93-hp supercharged 1.0 L 8V I4 gas engine, a 109-hp 1.6 L 8v gasoline/ethanol I4 engine, a 143-hp 2.0 L I4 gas engine, or a 67-hp 1.4 L diesel I4 engine. The diesel engine delivered a fuel economy of even over 30 mpg in combined driving. The 1st-generation EcoSport also offered power steering, central locking, an air-conditioning system, an antilock braking system (ABS), and power windows.
The concept vehicle for the 2nd-generation EcoSport was unveiled in January 2012 at the 2012 New Delhi Auto Expo in New Delhi, India. The 2nd-generation EcoSport was then launched in July of the same year in Brazil. Unlike the 1st-generation model, the 2nd-generation EcoSport is designed to match the styling of the other current-generation Ford nameplates like the Fiesta and the Edge. Its exterior has sharper, edgier styling that strikes a chord with younger car buyers. Like with the 1st-generation EcoSport, the 2nd-generation models are offered with a range of 4-cylinder engines that vary from country to country. In the USA, the 2nd-generation EcoSport is available with either a 123-horsepower 1.0 L turbocharged ‘Ecoboost’ 3-cylinder gasoline engine or a 166-horsepower 2.0 L 4-cylinder gasoline engine. The 2.0 L engine comes with all-wheel-drive.
The 2nd-generation EcoSport also offers many desirable features. Its premium Titanium model offers features and accessories like 17-inch alloy wheels, heated outside mirrors, automatic wipers, a heated steering wheel, leather seating surfaces, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 10-speaker B&O Play premium audio system, a Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system, and much more. Opting for the sport-themed SES model will get you accessories like a rear spoiler, exclusively styled 17-inch alloy wheels, and sport-tuned shock absorbers.
