The Dodge car brand has long been known for its awesome muscle cars and sports cars. Dodge’s 2018 Challenger SRT Demon holds the title of the ‘most powerful American production car’. Dodge has also built some of the most dependable trucks on the market, and it also makes great minivans, e.g. the Dodge Grand Caravan, which is the longest running minivan nameplate in the US market.
The Dodge brand owes its inception to the famous Dodge brothers–Horace Elgin Dodge and John Francis Dodge. Horace and John got solid mechanical training in their father’s machine shop as they were growing up. They started out making bicycle and stove parts, but they soon found out that manufacturing auto parts for Detroit’s budding automotive industry was much more profitable. They founded the Dodge Brothers company in 1900 in Detroit, opened a machine shop the following year, and threw themselves into building transmissions, engines, and axles for the likes of Oldsmobile and Ford for several years. They became so popular for their well-crafted auto parts that when they finally announced that their intentions to build their own vehicles in 1913, over 22,000 entrepreneurs applied to partner with them. They established the Dodge Brothers Motor Company the same year, and in 1914, they debuted their first car, which was a 4-cylinder Dodge Model 30 touring car. By the next year, the Dodge brothers had sold over 45,000 units of this car. Unfortunately, the Dodge brothers died in 1920. John succumbed to influenza while Horace died of cirrhosis of the liver. The ownership of their company has since changed hands several times, but we still see the dedication to high build quality that the Dodge brothers demonstrated in today’s Dodge vehicles. Currently, Dodge is a division of the FCA (Fiat Chrysler Automobiles) US LLC, based in Auburn Hills, Michigan.
Dodge has been building trucks since 1917 and has inspired the evolution of the trucking industry over the years with the likes of the 1978–1979 Lil Red Express and the 1989–1991 Dodge Dakota Sport Truck Convertible. From the early 1980’s, Dodge’s pickup trucks were dubbed ‘Ram’ pickup trucks and were sold under the Dodge brand until 2010, when FCA US LLC established Ram Trucks as a separate brand. So today, FCA US LLC sells all its trucks under the Ram Trucks brand, e.g. the Ram 1500, Ram 2500, and Ram 3500.
There is also a lot to be said about Dodge’s muscle cars and SUVs. Undoubtedly, the Viper is a legend in its own right; it even had a television series named after it in the ‘90s. The Dodge Charger and Dodge Challenger have also held their own in the highly competitive US sports car market since the ‘60s. The Dodge Journey SUV’s straightforward blend of practicality, dependability, and affordability has continued to win over American families, and the Dodge Durango’s solid capability, muscular looks, and compelling performance has also made it stand out among the 3-row midsize SUVs on the market.
